Industrial machinery technicians install, repair, and
service industrial machinery. They follow blueprints and other technical
instructions to diagnose problems and make repairs. They inspect and replace
seals, gaskets, hoses, tubing, motors, pumps, and filters.
These technicians use meters and gauges to measure and align parts. They use
machinist's hand tools, chain hoists, and steel rollers to take apart, repair,
or replace defective parts. They keep up-to-date records of repairs and
inspection schedules.
Working Conditions
Industrial machinery technicians work 40 hours a week. They may be on-call to
make emergency repairs at night or on weekends. Some work shifts at large
manufacturing plants to keep production going around-the-clock.
Work Places
Work locations for this occupation include all types of manufacturing
facilities, oil refineries, food processing industries, and public utilities.
Worker's Comments
Industrial machinery technicians like the challenge of keeping the production
process running smoothly. They like the variety of their work activities and
their high wages.
They do not like the pressure associated with repairing complex machinery as
quickly as possible. They feel that some do not appreciate the importance of
their work in keeping industrial machinery operating efficiently.
