Machinists set up and run machines that shape metals into precision parts.
Machinists make products such as machine gears and cutting tools.
Machinists plan and carry out all machining operations. They select the right
materials and tools for each job. Using blueprints and written instructions,
they plan the cutting and finishing process. This involves determining the
correct dimensions for each part. They then measure and mark the metal workpiece
according to directions.
Machinists work on machines such as lathes, shapers, grinders, milling machines,
and boring machines. They use precise measuring tools to check their work.
Hours & Conditions
Machinists work 40 hours a week. Their shops are clean and well lighted. They
follow strict safety rules.
Work Locations
Machinists work in small machine shops or in machine shops within larger plants.
Pros & Cons
Machinists enjoy the challenge of applying their skills to problems involved in
making metal parts. They like to see well-made products. The pay and job
security are good. Some work hazards are involved. Some jobs involve doing the
same thing over and over.
